Marcus was right. He hadnât been much help, except to eliminate the only idea Iâd had to explain how Luke got the original $5,000 he needed. Follow the money might have worked for Woodward and Bernstein, but it wasnât doing a thing for me.
My phone pinged with a text from Charlotte. Nora Fieldingâs contact information.
Iâm not great at asking people for favors, especially people I donât know. But getting Nora Fielding on the board of the Himmel Times would be amazing. I punched in her number before I talked myself into procrastinating the ask.
âNora Fielding speaking.â
Her voice was lovely, deep, and rich. My own came out sounding like a breathless fangirl. Which I basically was.
âHi, my name is Leah Nash. I love your books. Death Play was the very first mystery I readâgrown-up mystery, I mean, once Iâd gone all the way through Nancy Drew. Iâve read every one of your books since then. Iâm a huge fan.â
âThank you, Leah thatâs very kind of you. Iâm so glad you enjoy my work.â
âOh, I do. My mother does too. In fact, I have a copy of your latest, Love Lies, to give her for Christmas.â
âThatâs lovely to hear. But while itâs very pleasant for the first phone call of the day to be so flattering, I wonder if thereâs another reason youâre calling?â
I was mortified.
âOh, geez, yes, there is. Iâm so sorry for babbling. I forgot to say that Iâm co-owner of the Himmel Times newspaper. Weâre in the process of moving to a nonprofit status. One of our board members, an acquaintance of yours, Marilyn Karr, suggested you might be interested in learning more about the project and perhaps joining our board. But I absolutely understand that you must be very busy, and you havenât lived in the community for long, and you probably donât have much time to give toâ ââ
She laughed and said, âIâm sorry to interrupt, but I have to put you out of your misery. Iâm going to assume selling is not one of your core strengths. Iâm familiar with the direction your paper is taking. Iâm very interested in the idea.â
âYou are? Thatâs wonderful. Iâd love to buy you lunch and tell you more about it.â
âIâd like that. But can I suggest that we donât go out for lunch? Could you come to my place on Kipp Lake? I think it will be easier to talk here. You can be the first guest in my just finished house.â
âYes, absolutely. I would love to. When would you like to meet?â I was gushing like a broken water pipe, but I couldnât seem to stop myself.
âI have a couple of speaking engagements this week and some book business to attend to. What about the week after . . . say, Wednesday? Would that work for you?â
âYes, sure,â I said without looking at my calendar. Anything on it, I would happily rearrange. âWhat time?â
âLetâs say around one oâclock.â
âThatâs fine.â
âA week from this coming Wednesday it is. Iâll text you my address.
